Malvenn is a traditional balfolk trio based in Montreal with harp, cello, and clarinet. Coming from musical of traditional and classical music backgrounds, the three musicians of Malvenn offer a refined and unique interpretation of the balfolk repertoire. With original compositions and arrangements of themes from Breton, Irish, and Québécois musical heritage, the trio is shaping a new sonic signature in Quebec’s folk music landscape. Malvenn has performed events around North America including the Grand Bal du Québec, the Flurry Festival, and the Chants de Vielles festival. They have also toured extensively in Quebec and Ontario. They will release an album in 2026 and tour in Europe next summer.
So what is balfolk, you ask?
Balfolk music is a modern revival of traditional western European folk dance tunes, especially from France, Belgium, and surrounding regions with social dances like the mazurka, schottische, and bourrée.
